Bollywood lovers are happy to be back in theatres, this year was definitely full of excitement when it comes back to watching the best bollywood movies on the big screen. It was also, of course, the year of the Hindi language film Gangubai Kathiawadi, which created a huge buzz in India and abroad, in its wake created all kinds of box-office records. The enthusiasm with which the film has been received outside India was interesting for South Asian critics, who don’t understand what the whole song and dance is all about. Meanwhile, Hindi language cinema continued its recent cycle of a few films that missed delivering a well-experienced masala plot and a handful that struck our senses. Here are the best 11 movies list you can watch in your free time.

1. Gehraiyaan
Mahesh Bhatt’s Seminal Earth (1982) was inspired by his own dirty marriage, while Silsila (1981) continues to thrill people with the way Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan portrayed Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan’s real-life triangle with Rekha. There were a lot of expectations around a contemporary look at marriage and infidelity in Gehraiyaan, especially when director Shakun Batra delivered an amazingly complex dysfunctional family in Kapoor & Sons (2016). Dhairya Karwa is barely making it to the trailer starring Deepika Padukone, Ananya Panday, and Siddhant Chaturvedi. Based on the pulsating song ‘Doobi’ (sung by Lothika), the song showcases a mundane and Instagram-worthy backdrop against which very good-looking people romance each other. The depths are very cute to look at.
But there isn’t much honesty in the film that intends to expose the depth of the lies we tell each other and ourselves. Deepika’s character Alisha is a yoga instructor who seriously needs to focus more on her breathing and exhalation, especially since she keeps “feeling stuck“. Only Ananya Panday, who plays the rich Brat Tia, contributes something special to the film, probably because she appears comfortable in the role, unlike her real life. Gehrian was really a disappointment as trying to make some point around realities and perceptions in long-term relationships and short-term love relationships, which could make for a compelling story with the Gehraiyaan movie actor’s name.

3. Gangubai Kathiawadi
It’s been a while since Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historical scene mesmerized me. Best Bollywood Movies After the magnificence of Bajirao Mastani, there was also the disappointment of Padmavat. Both films had Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone and a soft saffron agenda—given that both films were “inspired” by history, and portrayed Muslims as cruel and ruthless invaders who betrayed Indian kings and queens.
Gangubai Kathiawadi takes a page from a more recent chapter of Indian history. It is set against the backdrop of post-independence India when the country was just about to gain a foothold. The film tells the story of the rise of Gangubai, who was sold to a brothel at an early age and grows up fighting for women’s equity. Bhansali’s films are known for their color palette and as Gangubai, Alia is dressed in a white saree with a big red bindi on her forehead. The young actress is able to bring seriousness to the role, without wandering in melodrama.

4. Darlings
With this film, Alia Bhatt added her name to the growing list of female producers of the best Bollywood movies. In this new role, Bhatt says she hopes to be able to bring new stories and voices to the screen, especially on streaming platforms. From the moment she read the script for Darlings, she knew it was a perfect project for Netflix.
Alia Bhatt is part of the ensemble cast that has shined in various projects over the years. She plays Badrunisa, a lovely young lower-middle-class woman who is married to Hamza (Vijay Varma), a ticket collector on Mumbai’s transit system. Hamza is a decent husband but has a tendency to violence after drinking alcohol. Badru’s mother Shamsunnisa (Shefali Shah) keeps urging her daughter to leave Hamza and sometimes seeks the help of Zulfi (Roshan Mathew).

5. Laal Singh Chaddha
Do we really need a remake of Hindi Forrest Gump? Obviously, the forces present in Best Bollywood Movies thought so. Khan is known for his stellar perfection in playing roles and adapting to the character. But in this case, he’s just following the playbook of a movie that’s three decades old. It has all the closing, saccharin sweetness of origin, which has just been implanted in Chandigarh. So a box of chocolates becomes a plate of round-gape – one of my favorite Indian street snacks, and I would never want to associate it with this movie. A train station is converted to a park bench.

6. Brahmastra
After several flop films, the Hindi film industry was looking for some relief at the box office. Despite the lack of a coherent or concrete story, Brahmastra worked on the front. Grossing over $50 million worldwide, it was the top-grossing best Bollywood movie for 2022. It’s also now available to watch for your viewing pleasure on Disney+.
If you decide to make the tune, then know that Bollywood threw everything away and the kitchen drowned in this film. Both of those films starred Ranbir Kapoor, a descendant of Bollywood, and Kapoor returned as the lead character Shiva in Brahmastra. Include Bollywood biggies like Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, and Shah Rukh Khan as well as his wife Alia Bhatt in this mix. This was followed by Telugu films like Baahubali (2015) and RRR (2022) with CGI and special effects.

7. Vikram Vedha
This folk tale is inspired by Vikram-Betaal, where a king is tasked with carrying a strange feeling on his back and answering questions asked during their journey together.
He is tasked with nabbing Vedha, a mysterious gangster who is setting fire to the streets of Chennai with murder and mayhem. Vedha is caught three times by Vikram who asks her a question in the encounter. The Tamil film is gritty, and both Madhavan and Sethupathi present their lines and action scenes with style and flair. Both the stars bring their characters to life, using attractive muscles and ripping bodies.

8. Monica, O My Darling
Monica, O My Darling is a fascinating thriller that pays tribute to the bygone Bollywood era. Perhaps it fits into this larger post-pandemic movement of making films about films. (Think of The Fableman and Empire of Light.) Starring our favorite Bollywood star Rajkummar Rao, the film is about a roboticist Jayant Rudhekar who gets caught up in a story of sex, betrayal, and murder. Jayant’s own moral compass is very shady, so in a way, he does his job. Huma Qureshi as Monica is worth watching every scene with enthusiasm. There are a lot of twists, as are the hints for films ranging from Bollywood to Hollywood. Apart from this, Radhika Apte is playing the role of ACP Naidu, a delicious quirky cop.

9. Bhediya
This title definitely got an eye roll from my side. Are we working on the Hindi remake of Teen Wolf? Thankfully, it’s not quite Jejun and the creators of Wolf have given us the fairly successful horror-comedy film Stree, as well as the dubious Ruhi. Go with low expectations and the wolf can give some pleasant surprises and its best Bollywood movie.

10. Qala
After enthralling the audience with Bulbul (2020), set against the backdrop of the Bengal Presidency era, writer-director Anvita Dutt is returning with yet another brilliant film set in pre-independence India. While her previous film explored ideas of female desire and male vision, art descends into a complex mother-daughter relationship through song and its best Bollywood movie.
Kala (Trupti Dimri) is a talented singer. However, she is upset with her mother’s criticisms. It is learned that her mother had expected Kala’s adopted brother Jagan to carry forward the family’s musical legacy. No matter how hard Art tries for her mother’s approval, she only gets a scandalous look and casual look. While the art is gorgeous to look at, each frame is captured like a painting, it is plagued by a one-note performance by its characters. Although they navigate complex relationships, there isn’t much to change their circumstances, which could pull off an otherwise ether-looking film.
